First things to try

  1. Open the recipe page itself, not a list of recipes or a search page, then click the toolbar button or press Alt+Shift+K.
  2. Pin the extension (the puzzle icon in the toolbar, then the pin) so its button is always one click away.
  3. If the page has no recipe data, open the popup and use the quick converter: pick the ingredient, type the amount and choose the unit.
  4. Use "As written" on the card to compare the converted amounts with the author's original ones.
  5. Reload the recipe page after you install or update the extension.

Common problems and fixes

“No recipe found on this page”

The card reads the structured recipe data (schema.org) that most large cooking sites publish. Some pages don't have it, or only show a list of recipes. Open the recipe's own page, or use the quick converter in the popup.

Nothing happens when I click the button or press Alt+Shift+K

Chrome doesn't let extensions run on its own pages (chrome://, the Chrome Web Store) or on PDF files. On a normal page, reload it once and try again. If the shortcut does nothing, another extension may use Alt+Shift+K: set a different one at chrome://extensions/shortcuts.

The button doesn't appear on recipe pages by itself

That is the automatic button, and it is off by default. Turn it on in Settings and accept Chrome's prompt. If you declined the prompt, the card opens only after you click the toolbar icon. The button shows up only on pages with recipe data.

An ingredient stays in millilitres instead of grams

The card weighs only the ingredients it knows, about 50 common ones. For anything else it converts by volume, so you get millilitres rather than a guessed weight. Use the popup's quick converter if you know the ingredient's weight per cup.

The grams look different from another chart

Charts disagree because a cup of flour can weigh anything from 115 to 150 g depending on how it is filled. The card uses USDA weights for a spooned and levelled cup and rounds to what a kitchen scale shows. Check the original amount under "As written".

A temperature or pan size in the steps was not converted

The card converts amounts it can read clearly, such as 350 °F or a 9×13-inch pan. Unusual wording stays as the author wrote it. The ingredient list is converted either way.

“This file isn’t an export from My recipes”

Import accepts only files made with Export in My recipes. Recipes that are already saved are not added twice, and damaged entries are skipped with a note.

The QR code opens an empty page or a short version

The recipe travels inside the link, and a QR code holds only so much. For long recipes the card shortens the steps or keeps only the ingredients and the recipe's web address, and says so under the code. Copy the link instead if you want to send it by message.

Your data

Recipe Converter keeps your settings in Chrome's sync storage and the recipes you save, with any calories you type, in this browser's local storage. Nothing is uploaded. You can delete saved recipes in My recipes or export them to a file. To stop the automatic button, turn it off in Settings: that also returns the site permission. Removing the extension deletes all of its data.
