First things to try

  1. Pin the extension (the puzzle icon in the toolbar, then the pin) so the calculator is always one click away.
  2. Pick the preset closest to your bake first, then change the percentages.
  3. Open "Flour blend, starter and extras" to set whole wheat or rye, the starter's own hydration, yeast, oil and sugar.
  4. For several pizzas or a loaf of a set weight, switch to "By dough weight" and enter the pieces and grams per piece.
  5. Want more room? Open the full-page dough planner or the side panel from the popup.

Common problems and fixes

The overall hydration is higher than the water percentage

That is the true hydration: the starter brings its own flour and water. A 100% starter is half flour and half water, so it raises the total. Set the starter's hydration under "Flour blend, starter and extras" if yours is stiffer.

The popup doesn't offer the recipe on this page

It reads pages that publish structured recipe data (schema.org) and only when you open the popup on that tab. Some pages have no such data, or list the flour in a way it can't match. Enter the amounts yourself: the formula works the same.

The bulk time looks too short or too long

It is an estimate from your dough temperature, for a sourdough at the starter share you set. Warm dough ferments faster, cold dough slower. Edit the time to match your kitchen, and judge the dough by how it looks and feels.

I don't get fold reminders

The toolbar button always shows the time left and the next fold. Desktop notifications are optional: turn them on in Settings and allow Chrome's prompt. Check that notifications for Chrome are allowed in your computer's system settings.

The timer stopped when I closed the popup

It keeps running: the toolbar button counts down, and the popup or the dough planner shows the same timer when you open it again. Pausing or stopping it is up to you.

“This file isn’t an export from My doughs”

Import accepts only files made with Export in My doughs. Doughs that are already saved are not added twice.

The QR code doesn't open the timer on my phone

The formula and the timer's start time travel inside the link. Make sure the timer was running when you made the code, and that your phone's clock is set automatically, since the countdown is worked out from the start time.

Your data

Sourdough Calculator keeps your settings, the doughs you save in My doughs and the state of a running timer in Chrome's storage on this computer. Nothing is uploaded: the extension makes no network requests. You can delete saved doughs in My doughs or export them to a file. Removing the extension deletes all of its data.
